Look forward to hearing about it! So what's up with all these tie scores? I wonder if that's one of the reasons soccer isn't very popular here. It just seems lame to tie it up in world championship play, and then stop playing. Couldn't they just play for 10 more minutes without goalies or something? Do you get the impression that the fans LIKE this outcome? How is it handled in the final game of the whole tourney?

They let the ties stand in the first round only. You get 3 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. Top two teams from each group based on that point system go through. Tie breakers are goals scored and goals allowed. All the remaining games are single elimination so you will see extra time from now on. Penalty kicks will determine winner if still a tie after the extra time.
Do fans like a tie? If your team is the underdog you often like it. The US v Italy tie game is considered a huge win for US soccer. From the World Cup perspective, getting more fan interest probably isn't that high on FIFA's list. MLS is concerned about it though. There are a ton of arguments out there as to why the US can’t get more into soccer. The argument I think is most persuasive is simply that the US already has enough sports for people to follow. I don’t think there is inherently anything about the actual game of soccer that turns people off. It’s all environmental. If you grow up in a baseball family, you will love baseball. If you grow up in a soccer family, you will love soccer.
